A TIME TO BE BORN:
Phillip Clement Woolridge Abrams was born on March 2, 1951, in British Guyana (now Guyana), to Nellie and McLean Abrams. He was the beloved eldest of four siblings: Veronica, Jeanette, and Marcia. Phillip met and married Amryl Garvin, and out of that union, they produced two wonderful children, Jason and Avyan. From an early age, Phillip carried a sense of responsibility, style, and charm that would follow him throughout his life.
A TIME TO LEARN:
In 1960, the Abrams family migrated to London, where Phillip spent his formative years. He attended Clissold Park Elementary School, where he was immersed in British culture, developing a love for literature. After high school, in 1971, the family relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, where Phillip attended the University of Massachusetts and earned a bachelor’s degree in English. It was also at UMass where he met his future wife, Amryl.
A TIME TO LIVE:
Phillip had an effervescent presence—his hearty laugh, distinctive English accent, and magnetic personality made moments with him feel special. He was a member of the Shellburne Football Club and played in the Massachusetts Soccer League. He built a brotherhood within the team. Phillip dove into entertainment and promotions with his well-known after-hours basement parties, produced by AmPhil Productions, which he named after himself and his wife, Amryl. Phillip took AmPhil Productions to the West Side, where he became one of the top promoters in the Bay Area. Phillip found joy in bringing people together through his legendary parties, boat rides, fashion shows, and charity events with guest celebrity appearances, such as Isabel Sanford, who played Weezy on “The Jeffersons”. Phillip had a humorous side with a touch of sophistication, like eating curry roti with a knife and fork, and making his famous “Spaghetti Bolognese” every Wednesday in true Phillip fashion. His sharp wit, signature style, and warm charisma made him unforgettable to those around him.
A TIME TO WORK:
Phillip’s professional journey began at IBM in Massachusetts, where he worked for several years. Phillip’s entrepreneurial spirit allowed him to have business from New York to California. With a keen eye for innovation, Phillip launched several ventures—including a modular furniture line and a tailoring business inspired by his father’s trade, specializing in children’s uniforms, naming the uniform line after his daughter, Avyan. With his right-hand man, his son Jason, assisting him in his tailoring shop. Phillip didn’t just pass down the craft but also the mindset of entrepreneurship, planting seeds of independence and creativity in his children.
A TIME TO REST:
Upon retirement, Phillip moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, with his then-life-time partner, Mabel, where he was afforded more opportunities to spend time with his kids and grandkids. Though his later years were marked by health challenges—including a battle with dementia—he faced them with resilience and grace. He passed away peacefully on May 18, 2025, surrounded by love and the sound of his family.
A TIME TO REMEMBER:
Phillip will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his children, Jason Abrams and Avyan Abrams; his cherished grandchildren, Barrington Lalor II, Aria, King, Noah, and Majesty Abrams; his sisters Veronica Babb whose marriage to David brought two children, Brian and Kristina, Jeanette Abrams, and Marcia Abrams whose marriage to James brought two children, Aidyn and Ashton; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Nellie and McLean Abrams, and his beloved aunts, Stella Greene and Aletha Marshall.
